IdahoNewsForum That decision should be up to the parents of the child. Not a decision made by a board made up of a minority of the citizenry. Most conservatives talk about freedom of speech (literature being a form of speech) but being willing to silence speech when they disagree with it. Most Conservatives talk about parental control until they disagree with said control. I find it very disingenuous and controlling.

Monkeyboy1970 It seems we are talking about whether or not the Nampa School Board should be giving my kids access to material which you say should be my decision whether or not they see it. If it is in the school library, I have no ability to control my kids’ ability to see it, right?

Unless you personally review what materials the library has and request that your child does not have the ability to check it out. It does take work to be a parent. Get to know the library. Get to know the staff. They will work with you. Don’t dictate your concerns on others. That’s a bit Dictatorial is it not?

I don’t think I’m seeing it the way you are.
It seems we agree that parents should get to decide what their kids see?

Nampa High Schools have how many hundreds/thousand kids in them? How many different librarians? How many books? It seems like a logistical nightmare to assume the best solution is to have the government stocking fringe reading material and expecting everyone else to discover it for themselves (by adults wandering around school libraries) and then opting out of it for their kids?
Seems way simpler if a book comes up that is shocking to the senses to just not stock it and if a parent wants their kid exposed to it then they can buy it for them or take them to a public library.

Parental choice is what we are agreeing on.

What I’m talking about is a minority dictating what the majority is allowed to see and do.

Who’s the one that gets to decide what is “shocking to the senses”? What maybe for you may not be for me. In “Adventures of Tom Sawyer” Huck Finn had a friendly relationship with a black man. Some may find that “shocking to the senses”. Do we ban that book for that minority?

Gotcha. It seems to boil down to democracy vs republic. Democracy, the majority wins. In a Republic, the representatives consider the minority and make rules that represent them without infringing on the rights of others.

I guess we could say you lean more Democratic in this debate where I lean more Republican (blechh). So sick of those parties.

Anyway..how else would the minority be represented? They are now placed in a predicament where their tax dollars are funding objectionable content which they are not aware of and their kids are locked behind doors with said content without their approval or input. Do you have a solution to that view?

IdahoNewsForum That is the challenge of living in a Democratic Republic. There will never be iron clad solutions but we are allowed debate. Which is the foundation of our country.
